When you hear the word 𝙉𝙚𝙩𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜, does it make you feel dirty?

🤢 When you hear the word 𝙉𝙚𝙩𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜, does it make you feel dirty?

When I started writing my book on Networking, Julian Mills introduced me to a professor, Tiziana Casciaro, that had done research on this subject. Yes, someone in his network.

👩‍🔬👨‍🔬The joint study done by the University of Toronto and Northwestern University suggests that 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗽𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝘀 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝘁𝘆.

📑In an abstract about the research it was stated that, “In professional networking, ‘𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀, and the lack of justification comes from the difficulty people have in 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘂𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗻,’ says Prof. Casciaro, who teaches organizational behaviour at University of Toronto – Rotman School of Management and researches networks and organizations.”

Everyone understands the 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 but sometimes you just don’t “feel right”.

Even when I have talked about networking with people, some people have said, “I make connections or cultivate relationships, I don’t network.”

📈 𝗪𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹, regardless of how you label it.

😷 You can feel “less dirty” when you 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻. Regardless of your seniority.

“𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲,” 𝘀𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗿𝗼.”
